Centrifugal Compressors – Stress Corrosion Cracking

Materials operating where the combination of tensile stress, a corrosive medium present, and a concentration of oxygen are susceptible to stress corrosion cracking. The effects of stress and corrosion combine to produce spontaneous metal failure.

Because all conditions required for stress corrosion cracking are less likely to exist in a normal environment, corrosion cracking is not as common. Also, materials modified for sulfide cracking produce a material less susceptible to stress corrosion.
